With so much malware on the Internet, nothing is safe to download these days. Your system can be infected and you will not even realize when and how. If you don't have any software to protect against this kind of threats, you should be mindful of what you download or you can let Buffer Zone do this for you. It will protect your system against malware by creating an isolated zone on your hard drive. Anything you download will be placed in this virtual zone, so it will not harm the system.

With a setup package of 13 and a half Mb, Buffer Zone can be downloaded fast. The installation process will also be a swift task. The wizard will only require a destination path and the setup process will begin immediately.

Sending downloads to a virtual zone does not mean you will not find them in your default downloads folder. They can be found in the same place as before, but as shortcuts. The real files will be placed in C:Virtual. If, for example, you run a setup kit placed in the virtual zone, a message will pop up, asking you if the program should be installed normally or in the virtual zone. A program or document which will run in the virtual zone can be spotted easily due to a red border, drawn around its window.

By default, Buffer Zone will monitor popular web browsers (IE, Firefoxe, Chrome, Opera, Safari), e-mail clients, instant messengers and a few other applications, like Windows Media Player. You can change a few things by making use of the simple, sleek looking user interface. A few buttons, placed on a column on the left side of the window, will let you access different options. Clicking the Firewall button will display a list of programs which will be allowed through Buffer Zone's firewall or not. A small Add button will bring up a window where you can specify a program, an IP address or a port, and choose if the program's access should be allowed or denied.

The Policy button will display two sliders on the main part of the window, which you can use to set a security level. If a slider is set to minimum, anything you install will be placed outside the virtual zone and if set to maximum, all known or unknown programs will be placed inside the zone without prompting you for confirmation. One of the sliders will set this policy for downloads and the other, for files or programs on an external device, such as a USB stick.

Statistics such as the number of contained Internet activities, prevented privacy or system threats can be viewed by clicking the Summary button. A list of the programs running in Buffer Zone will also be displayed and you can use this like a task manager. Right clicking on one of the entries will display options to see details, forbid or terminate that program. Also in the summary view, you will find a series of hyperlinks, placed on the bottom part of the interface. These will help you make other programs run in Buffer Zone, take a snapshot of the virtual zone, restore it or erase everything in it.

Pros

Buffer Zone is an efficient and free alternative to advanced and expensive protection software. It will not recognize malicious software, but anything you download or copy to your computer will be isolated from your system, keeping it safe from known or unknown threats.

Cons

The software tends to slow down the system. This should not be a real issue, unless you have a low end computer. While having Buffer Zone installed, you can read your e-mail and open their attachments, surf anywhere on the web and download anything without fearing that your system will be infected by malicious software.
